Prioritizing Mental Health Amid Crises
The magnitude of the wildfires in Southern California and their long-term impact on our health and well-being cannot be overstated. Our heart goes out to all who have been personally impacted, and in this moment of need, Californians are coming together to support one another. Healing will take time, will look different for everyone and will require a variety of supports and services from the local and state-level. In the wake of crises and tragedies, prioritizing mental health is even more important-whether we are directly or indirectly impacted.
CYBHI – borne out of the need to support young people in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis – is aiding efforts to address the anguish and trauma many young people are facing.
Through radio, social media, and in-person events, information is being shared about Soluna and BrightLife Kids, where children, youth, and families can connect with mental health professionals and begin the journey of processing this trauma. These resources are 100% free and available in multiple languages, with no-insurance needed. Conversation guides and trainings are being uplifted for adults/school staff seeking to better understand how to talk about this tragedy with kids in a developmentally appropriate manner. Connections are being facilitated between impacted schools and those who have (unfortunately) supported students impacted by wildfires before, such as those in Northern California.
