Children, Youth, and Family Network Statewide Convening: A Recap
In January 2026, with support from The Social Changery, CYBHI hosted a convening of a network of community organizations that have been serving as consultants to help deepen and strengthen ongoing, meaningful, authentic youth and family engagement within the work.
There was something special about being in the room; it wasn’t just another agenda-packed meeting—it was a gathering of people who care deeply about young people, families, and the communities that support them. From the opening keynote, kicked off by CalHHS Secretary Kim Johnson, it was clear this space was designed for connection, reflection, and shared purpose.
“This convening was a powerful and timely reminder that improving mental health isn’t something we do alone—it happens in community. At a time when so many are carrying uncertainty, exhaustion and worry, community and togetherness are not just values, they’re necessities. When we come together across systems, generations, and lived experiences, and work in partnership with young people, we’re showing what’s possible when California leads with compassion, connection and care for the mental health and well-being of all.”
What stood out most was how intentionally youth voices were centered throughout the meeting. Young people weren’t just referenced—they were the main event. Discussions like “Lessons from the Field: Youth at the Center” and the “Boys and Men’s Mental Health Panel” featured youth experiences, insights, and ideas and reminded everyone why this work matters in the first place.
“I was incarcerated at the age of 19 facing 23 years to life in prison. I correlate all of that to the trauma I was enduring growing up. With awareness came willingness to be a force of change in my community.” – Swey Pineda, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Hoops 4 Justice
Throughout the convening, there was a strong sense of togetherness. Community partners, advocates, families, and leaders came together not as silos, but as collaborators—celebrating how far we’ve come but also getting inspired to continue building momentum.
“The CYF Network has been a gamechanger. I have so much gratitude to be connected to a network that leads with intention and authenticity for organizations like mine leading the work to impact and heal youth across California.” –Nakeya Bell, SistaBees
The meeting also made space for everyone to participate in multiple stress-busting and movement activities that were also led by youth — a self-guided art activity, a sound bath and basketball with Hoops 4 Justice.

As the convening wrapped up, the takeaway was clear. Progress happens when we listen first, lead together, and make space for youth to help guide the way forward. The Children, Youth, and Family Network Statewide Convening was a powerful reminder that community isn’t just part of the work—it is the work.
